So, I have been trying to integrate myself into the phenomenon known as Twitter. I had signed up for a Twitter account many months ago, but didn't quite get what it was about. I found I would tweet (\ˈtwēt\, intransitive verb, meaning to type your thoughts or what you are doing on Twitter) more as though I were on Facebook, which was not conducive to my business. So, I abandoned it.
A few weeks ago, I kept hearing more and more about Twitter, so I decided to go back to my account and browse the site to see what I could learn. I found I wasn't the only business person going through these motions. One of my fellow Twitterers, InnConsultant recently blogged about similar findings, and I want to make clear that I am not trying to 'steal' his blog idea. In fact, I found his blog entry both educational and informative and it helped me learn more about what I can and should be doing on Twitter. So, thanks, InnConsultant!
I started with only a handful of friends and family as followers. And while I appreciate their support, I realized they are not who I was targeting. I needed to start following innkeepers, tourism departments, avid travelers, and well, anyone who garners an interest in travel. So, I set off - cautiously - to find these people.
I am now approaching 50 followers! It has been very fun, and I've picked up some famous followers along the way (who might not actually have anything to do with traveling, but I enjoy reading their tweets - it makes me feel like I have a more direct connecting to people I admire)! I have found that Twitter is quite informative, if you’re using it correctly. There are plenty of Twitterers who use it simply as a means to communicate with friends, and only tweet about their daily activities. But for Twitterers like myself and InnConsultant, it has become a valuable source for learning about news, events, specials, and information pertaining to the industry we represent: travel.
So, if you’re interested to know what we’re tweeting about, Follow me on Twitter!
